This is POP?

'This is POP?' A mix of songs and artists that have the same tenuous connection with the world of pop as the Top Of The Popper's version of “Autobahn” which inspired the thing in the first place (thanks Sean)

The Soul Affair 22nd August 2010

'Intelligent Jungle', psychedelic Stone's Throw madness, house music and , erm, Chicago...all human life was here. Plus Lou Bond's 'To The Establishment' - a bonkers 11 minutes that starts with a meditation on real-ness ("only realness is really real" etc), followed by a moan about having to go to the shops for his girlfriend's chapstick, followed by 6 minutes of singing in what might be Orkish (sadly he doesn't say 'Shazbat' at any point.) Insane and totally wonderful.

2. Michael Leonhart & The Avramina 7 - Madhouse Mumbai
3. Mike Harper - Lay It On Me Baby

Amateur hour

My old work mucker Paul Southgate (or Polle van de Gash, if you prefer) runs the excellent Amateur Athletics night at the Social in London. He also has a blog with sporadic postings of his wonderfully wonky mixes and other musical ephemera. They really are excellent and well worth checking out. I mean, did you know Chubby Checker had done an amazing pysch-soul album? Me neither.

He very kindly asked me to contribute a mix at the end of last year and, of course, I was more than happy to put something together. He posted it up in April but – god knows how – I missed it and didn’t get round to thanking him for foisting it on his followers.

The link for it is below. I hope you enjoy this, and be sure to check out Polle’s stuff on there too. It really is top drawer.

H-eighties

I know, the eighties yadda yadda yadda. But it wasn’t all giant mobile phones, Duran Duran and ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’.

Jeremy Paxman got short shrift from David Peace in a recent interview where Paxman and PR hag Lynne Franks tried to portray the eighties as far less divisive and nasty that they actually were. Well worth a view at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/newsnight/8733178.stm

The brutal and highly politicised nature of those times still hold a grim fascination for me. So I thought a mix of brutal, unsettling and highly politicised music was just the ticket. That should sort everything out. Here it is...enjoy (if that’s the right word)

This week’s Soul Affair was meant to be a collection of old stuff I’d dusted off for the occasion. And there’s plenty of that here. But I couldn’t resist including a few new tracks, including the amazing hippy-soul of Michael Leonhart. Can’t wait to hear more from him.

Also interesting was the Gatur-Gator spelling debate that obviously raged within Nawlins 5-piece The Gaturs, (cf their song “Gator Bait”.) Who knows - perhaps their untimely demise was down to lexicographic differences?

The Soul Affair 31 January 2010

Just when you think you've seen everything...one of Active's old warhorse record players finally gave up the ghost yesterday (halfway through my show, of course) but not before spinning faster and faster and faster until the record nearly flew off the turntable. it was like some strange phonographic version of The Exorcist.

You will be relieved to hear that the record player was taken away and given a decent burial. I expect it will be replaced with something like this...
